Writing for Your Local Niche Site

One of the problems that I have faced, and judging from the looks of other local niche sites, is the burnout of what to write about. While the local niche site is a great idea, it is hard to compete with the “big boys” of the newspapers and television stations for getting the scoop of news.

So, what do you write about to increase your readership and potential for adsense or advertising revenue? How do you write in order to create income with your local niche site?

One aspect that I looked at when I started my local niche site was since I lived near a large metro area (Cincinnati) was that I would be competing with all of the other media outlets. I knew that I didn’t have the time to be continually writing for the local niche site either.

One of the first things I did was to take local news stories that were either in the newspaper or on the television and then expand on them. This is a great way to bring more information about a certain topic to light and really help bring readers to your site. You can also gain popularity with other media outlets by being the know all resource of information. So how does this aspect work?

If your local media outlet writes about a new restaurant that is getting ready to open, expand on what types of food they will serve. Provide some information about what the food represents and about the country that it is from. You can also write about what used to be in that location too. Anything that you can write to expand upon the topic that isn’t covered by the other media outlets is key here. Put information in your articles that no one else does, or cares to provide.

Another key area that is overlooked is something that I have been experimenting with. Let’s say that you have a large storm come through the area. Oh, let’s say something like Hurricane Ike. One of the first things I did was to write about how the storm hit the Northern Kentucky area. I wrote about the damage that it caused and how local agencies were working to restore electric power and other services.

Now this was a good article as people were looking for information about when they were possibly going to be getting their electric restored. They were looking for information about services that they could use to get the trees removed, or have their roofs fixed…get the idea here?

Well, due to the overwhelming response that I got from the article, I wrote another couple that dealt specifically with roofing repair companies and the scams that always follow them during emergencies and storms. I also wrote another article about how to find a good tree service and what to make sure that they have in order to be qualified.

Guess what? Those were some of the highest adsense clicks that I have ever recorded! When people are looking for information and you give them the teaser info with a “link” that provides the goods, you are golden!

So, what does this translate into? Pretty simply if you run out of local news and stuff of interest to write, don’t dump your local niche blog. Keep it and start writing posts for adsense or other advertisements.

Know of some services in your town that people are looking for? Write about it. Offer advertisement space or referal links to other businesses and write about them. You never know what they might offer up for payment. Of course, you could always write for adsense ads. Using generic posts but customizing them for your local niche is working even more for me so far.

What do you think? Have you had any luck with local niche advertising or not?

Writing for Your Local Niche Site…

So, what do you write about when you run out of things of interest in your local niche? There are so many local niche blogs and sites that start off strong and then fall apart. Trust me, mine was one of them.

I didn’t want to see my hard work and…

You’re so right. A local blog is a commitment to a sometimes narrow niche and so difficult to differentiate from the standard newspapers that have a full time staff to keep up to date.
But the discipline is useful and local niche posts can come from various angles, personal experience, and neighbors’ news.

I am definitely one of those that have put the local niche sites on the back burner. Mainly because I could not pinpoint the direction I wanted to take with it. It is constantly on my mind however.

Had many issues that kept me off line for almost three months and then when I got back just plain did not make it a priority. Don’t know why! I guess I was doing to good with it if that makes sense.

I never could figure out how to monetize it. Do you have Adsense on all your posts or do you use the who sees ads plug-in? Vic sort of abandoned any info on the local niche sites so I became lost as to what to do with it.

Thanks for the nudge to keep moving forward. Just not sure how to take the next step.

Denise, thanks for the comment! I can understand what you mean, trust me, that is why I have let this site fall off the face of the earth.

As for the adsense, I have begun putting it on all of my posts, just one 336X280 box at the top of the single post page. It is working out pretty good and some of the clicks are ok, but I have had single clicks as high as around $3 or so. I haven’t used the Who-Sees-Ad plugin as almost all of my traffic to the site is from search engines, mainly google.

You can see it at insidenorthernkentucky.com

Thanks Elliott for bringing the local niches back to life. I definitely will start the motor back up on this project and see what can be brought to bloom.

Excellent Article. Local niche sites can be a bit overwhelming at times that is for sure. I for one have struggled several times trying to come up with articles for my little town that weren’t already blasted all over other local news outlet. Thanks for the suggestions.

My biggest problem is that I hate writing and have all my articles for niche sites written for me. The thought of sitting down and doing a restaurant review makes my heart sink.

I do have some MFA articles on things like tanning salons which bring in a trickle of traffic and have certainly done pretty OK with clicks. The CTR is also very good because the person searching just wants the contact details of a local tanning salon and not an article about the subject.

PS. Just looked at my Adsense stats for my local site and I’ve made a grand total of $111.73, I think that’s pretty good considering I’ve only got Adsense on 3 pages.
