If you are justing looking to get backlinks and aren't worried about trying to drive traffic to the free hosted site, then they should be ok. But, I also agree that wordpress.com and blogger are also free and good for backlinks too. This list of free hosting sites just offers a little more in the way of allowing you more flexibility in adding your own items, templates, stuff more so than wordpress.com or blogger, which are restrictive as to the template and other items that you can do.
