I can already see many great emerging news sites and instead of cluttering up my blog roll, I will create a new page and link to those who put in the effort. Then I simply put a link into my blogroll which I renamed featured to that page. I'll name it Independent World News or similar, so my readers can get the benefit of those sites too. I'll try to keep in mind my target audience, just like you have described. For my area the tourist is highly targeted but not with high quality information - an opportunity. And the seasonal residents need different information not often available from the local newspaper or Chamber of Commerce, like Thom mentioned: haircuts, markets, gas. As these local niche sites appear I'm adding them to my rss reader.
