Your Local Niche Site Ideas
I was reading with great interest over at Vic’s Make Money Online blog at BloggerUnleashed about how we as niche bloggers are loosing money by not having a local niche blog. Several of the comments were from bloggers that either didn’t think they could make money with a local niche blog, or they already had domain names for a local niche but didn’t think it would work.
One of the comments that I read with great interest on Vic’s latest post Make $25k in 2008 I Challenge You! was from Tuppy that was wondering what he should do since he lives in an area that doesn’t have a large english speaking population. I won’t give away his location as a courtesy to him.
It made me think of some ideas that I feel can work tremendously if you are looking for ways to make your local niche blog work.
The local niche Tuppy was talking about was for a country that didn’t have a large english speaking population. He was wondering how he could make it work being an english speaker in his country.
Well, it is pretty easy for any “foreign” blog owner to make money with a niche blog, I would assume, as if you are living in the area, you know alot about it. Just think of it like this.
If I was a tourist wanting to visit another country, where would I turn for some information about tourism in that country? What about if I was a local and was looking for references for the best restaurant or real estate agent? I could always go down to the local bookstore, which is a possibility. But, most people turn to Google or the other search engines.
Now, lets narrow it down even more as searching by country name is a pretty big search. So, let’s take the name of the town(s) we are going to. As a tourist or visitor, I would probably want to find information dealing with what is the best restaurants to eat in, what is the weather like during the time I will be there, is there something fun or interesting to do?
These are things that can easily be blogged about on your local niche site.
Now, here is the way to make some money off of the site. Sell ads to these places you are writing about. Let them buy a post on your site. Set up pages for different topics that people can find out more information about what they are looking for.
Plus, you can always use Adsense or other monetization techniques too!
Maybe I am just rambling, but these are the things that I am going to be working on my new local niche site. I live in the Cincinnati area and have picked a targeted area. I plan on selling ad space to various people such as realtors, restaurants, etc, etc.
If you don’t think you can make money with a local niche site, you might be right. But if you don’t try it out, how will you ever know?
Come back tomorrow as I will show you an example of how all of this works by using a country that I have always wanted to visit, and let’s see what we can find, and some real ideas on how to make this work.
What other ideas would you have about local niche sites?

Your idea for Tuppy seems to make perfect sense. Of course, Tuppy might not be in an area that gets a lot of tourists, but there’s bound to be a lot of stuff he knows about the country he’s in that a lot of tourists do not and would enjoy finding out about by reading his blog.

Hi Elliott,
Good post and as I’m in a similar boat being in southern Spain you have the right ideas. You got me thinking about something, too – I’ve been gearing up to target the Costa Del Sol, but now I’m wondering if I shouldn’t go even tighter and just zero in on my town.
Only problem with that is monthly searches even for Mijas is so low – just a few a WEEK! whereas the Costa Del Sol at least gets a few hundred hits a month.
There’s the dilemma – virtually no searches on any of the local towns and actually quite a lot of Google competition on all related keywords (these people probably have no idea why nobody goes to their sites!), but better search results for the whole area.
I’m leaning towards covering the bigger area and dividing the blog into maybe local zones and getting round the problem that way.
Its all about the challenge as well, the tougher it is the bigger the happy slap on the back when it works!

Terry, I would think if there are only a few searches a week on your tightest area, I would go for the larger one as the secondary. What I am thinking about that is focus on both sets of keywords with your one blog. Either use a seperate page or section for it. The page one results of Google should be pretty easy to take on, even page two as there are only a couple of PR 5 and the rest look like PR 3 or 2 sites.
Good luck with this, and sign up over at blogexplosion.net for the support group!
Hi Elliott,
I agree with the possibilities. There is so much we can do to write about and I think Terry will find that it is a lot easier than anticipated. My niche is also very small, but then it is targeted and since we live here we know a lot of town goss and info. This can all be weaved into our niche blog too.
But I’m having troubles seeing were you put the sign up page for the niche group.

There are so many ways that local items can be weaved into your local niche blog, you just need to know which way works best.
As for the signup for the support group, it will be posted on how to sign up for it, and the “strict” requirements that MUST be met before being considered for entry.
Look for this post tonight around 11 pm Eastern Time USA. It will also be getting zoomed pretty quickly as I have to pull a 48 hour shift starting in the morning, but I will be checking in on signups throughout that time.
Best wishes and look forward to your submission!
I’ve just set up my local blog, and these are all the things I plan on writing about. good article.
